Former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has been named as the favourite to permanently replace Philippe Clement in the Ibrox dugout.

And while Barry Ferguson has stepped into the hotseat on an interim basis the door could still be open for the Liverpool icon to seal a sensation return at the end of the campaign. Belgian boss Clement was shown the door on Sunday in the midst of a dismal campaign with Rangers on the road to a season without silverware. The lacklustre defeat to St Mirren at Ibrox proving to be the final straw.

Gerrard is out of work following his ill-fated spell at Al-Ettifaq. After leaving Ibrox for his shot at the English Premier League he was shown the door by Aston Villa before making a surprise move to the Saudi Pro League. However, that spell came to an end earlier this season with Ettifaq struggling near the foot of the table.

Despite a disappointing spell since leaving Glasgow, Ally McCoist was quick to float the Premiership title-winning boss as a permanent successor to axed Clement on Monday morning. He told talkSPORT: “Stevie Gerrard would be in the conversation.

“Kevin Muscat has won three different leagues in three different countries. There’s one or two options, but there are not any glaring options.”

And reports now suggest why Gerrard is unlikely to take a job until April at the earliest. If he was to take a job before then, he would face potential tax issues in Saudi Arabia claim talkSPORT.

Ferguson is in charge at Ibrox until the summer at least with the new stand-in boss naming Allan McGregor, Billy Dodds and Neil McCann named as his new coaching team. The iconic captain could convince the club to extend his deal – but a move for Gerrard would finally be clear at the end of the campaign.
