(CNN) – The current U.S. egg shortage has led businesses to look for supply beyond U.S. borders.
According to the American Farm Bureau Federation, Turkey is the only country the United States imports eggs from.
Turkey is set to export 420 million eggs to the United States this year.
According to the Egg Producers Central Union in Turkey, this is the most ever exported.
Experts warn the increase in egg imports won’t make much of a dent in America’s egg shortage, especially if the bird flu continues to claim the lives of birds at its current pace.
The avian flu has killed more than 140 million egg-laying birds in the U.S. since 2022 and 17 million alone in November and December.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics said the price of a dozen large grade-A eggs recently hit an average of just under $5.00.
Prices are expected to rise another 20% this year.
