City officials say these projects are reducing serious fatal crashes by 22% citywide, saving an estimated $28.5 million in crash-related costs annually.

AUSTIN, Texas — Construction crews just wrapped up safety improvements at an intersection that city staff say is one of Austin’s most dangerous.

The work happened at Stassney Lane and South First Street as part of the city’s Vision Zero program, which aims to eliminate traffic deaths.

The city of Austin identified the intersection as a priority for safety improvements under the 2018 Mobility Bond, with partner funding coming from the Bikeways, Sidewalks and Transit Enhancement programs.

The improvements include:

  • New separated bikeways and shared-use paths to enhance bicyclist and micromobility safety
  • Sidewalk upgrades, including restriped high-visibility crosswalks and new ADA-compliant curb ramps
  • New or extended medians on intersection approaches to reduce conflict points
  • Driveway reconfigurations to provide safer access points
  • Relocated bus stops on eastbound Stassney Lane, serving high-frequency bus route 311

City officials say these projects are reducing serious fatal crashes by 22% citywide, saving an estimated $28.5 million in crash-related costs annually.
