NORTHFORK, W. Va. -Despite the devastation left by the flooding in McDowell County, the people in the community are stepping up to help their neighbors in need. One such place is the Northfork Community Fire Department, which became a drop-off and distribution center for needed resources as the entire area works to get back on their feet.
They’ve been hard at work since they opened, with help from others in the community as well, including some of the faculty from Kimball Elementary School who have been helping places around the area following the flood. Rhonda Cox, the CIS for Kimball Elementary School, says the food bags, hygiene bags, and cleaning supplies are “very important” to their community, with bottled water being especially important as Northfork residents currently unable to drink their water.
“It’s been going great. It gets a little tiresome and you get worn out, but then, when you see that face that lights up to let you know that, hey, you really made a difference in that person’s life, it makes it all worthwhile,” says Cox.
Cox thanks everyone who donated their time and resources to the Northfork Community Fire Department, including those who came from North Carolina to help. If you would like to help them as well, she says they are in need of more food, hygiene products, cleaning supplies, and, again, bottles of water.
They would also like more people to volunteer as well to keep the distribution center fully staffed. Those interested can call the Northfork Community Fire Department.
