A man who suffered serious head injuries when he was shoved to the ground outside a Motherwell pub is to get £2,000 compensation.

The incident led to first offender Cameron McGowan, 22, appearing at Hamilton Sheriff Court this week.

He admitted assaulting the victim to his severe injury and permanent impairment by pushing him and causing him to fall in Muir Street.

It happened shortly after 2am on December 9, 2023 when McGowan, of Green Gardens, Cleland, and the victim had an argument.

Daisy Bentley, prosecuting, said: “The accused pushed the victim who fell and hit the back of his head on the pavement.

“The accused went immediately to help him as did pub door staff.”

The court heard the victim was taken to hospital where he was treated for a fractured skull and bleeding to the brain.

The fiscal added: “An update on his condition from August last year states that he still had issues with his balance, smell, taste and eyesight.

“When questioned about the incident, the accused told police officers ‘I didn’t mean any malice. He called me a name and I just shoved him away from me’.”

Defence lawyer Eddie Robertson said his client had never been in trouble before and was willing to pay compensation.

Sheriff Louise Gallacher also ordered McGowan to do 180 hours of unpaid community work.
