First dates can be a gamble, and not everyone is lucky.
If you’ve spent time in the dating scene, chances are you’ve had your share of lacklustre or disastrous dates. For some, it’s a matter of not hitting it off due to differing interests or getting off on the wrong foot, such as showing up late. However, one woman’s recent first date was a particularly cringe-worthy experience, as the man across the table took it upon himself to berate her about everything he thought she did “wrong” during their dinner together.
Kayla shared a TikTok video, secretly recorded while her date drove her home from the restaurant, capturing some of the eyebrow-raising comments he made. Initially, the man expressed dissatisfaction with Kayla’s behaviour during dinner, specifically saying she wasn’t “calm” enough for his liking.
When she inquired about what he meant, he branded her behaviour “embarrassing”. But the reason was unexpected and had nothing to do with poor manners or table etiquette. What irked him was that Kayla joined in when a nearby table sang “Happy Birthday” to a six-year-old child.
In the clip, the unidentified man is heard saying: “The table next to us singing Happy Birthday and then you obnoxiously singing Happy Birthday out loud with them was kind of embarrassing. That was very inappropriate to me and honestly immature.”
The man shockingly told her he was attempting to “put her in check” so she could “fix” her behaviour. Kayla countered that the young girl was simply “excited” to see people singing Happy Birthday to her and felt she did nothing wrong by “spreading joy” and enhancing the child’s birthday celebration.
However, he retorted sharply, expressing his desire for “a sophisticated woman who’s classy and not going to get loud, especially when we’re on our first date”. The situation deteriorated further when he uttered a possessive two-word phrase, which signalled to Kayla that she would never see him again. He told her: “You’re mine.”
When she pressed him about his remark, he backpedalled, explaining he meant the date should have been exclusively between them, hence his disapproval of her engaging with others. Yet, he furthered the issue by criticising her choice of attire, accusing her of “trying to impress the whole room”.
Kayla went on to share more of their exchange in a follow-up video, where she informed her date there would be no future between them as she had no intention of seeing him again. The date ended with her demanding to be let out of the car, choosing to make her own way home instead.
Viewers of the video expressed their shock at the man’s conduct. Numerous comments flooded in, with many expressing relief that Kayla had escaped the ordeal unscathed. Others pointed out that despite the distressing experience, it was fortunate she discovered his true colours on the first date, saving her from potentially wasting more time on him.
One individual commented: “Glad it was revealed on the first date. Wow. Hope you’re okay.” Another advised: “Always drive separately on first dates!!” Meanwhile, a third person warned: “This is the most red flags strung together. RUN.”
