GEORGETOWN, Texas — As the 89th Legislature continues, one of the top priorities is still on the table: education savings accounts, which use tax dollars to help families pay for private school.
At the Texas Republicans’ Legislative Dinner at Sheraton Austin in Georgetown, Gov. Greg Abbott re-emphasized that this is the legislation he wants state lawmakers to pass this session.
During his speech, Gov. Abbott called out critics of the plan who say public schools will be defunded if the education savings account bill passes.
He claims a set of money will go towards public education and said Texas will not deny parents’ abilities to educate their kids the way they want to, denying the criticism it will only benefit the rich.
“The fact of the matter is, the rich already have access to school choice. This provides a level playing field for every family to be able to choose the best school for their child. One thing I have observed over time, that I wouldn’t be surprised if maybe you have made the similar observation when you look at the arguments made by leftists, they’re kind of outrageous arguments and they’ll make them over and over again,” Gov. Abbott said.
Gov. Abbott also thanked the Texas Senate for passing education savings accounts, going on to say the “steeper hill to climb,” has always been the Texas House.
To end his speech, Gov. Abbott said we are on the precipice of a session that’s “going to make Texas history.”
