FEMA’s Interim Director visits Pike County

PIKE COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) – A day after federal disaster aid was approved for Kentucky flood victims, FEMA’s Interim Director Cameron Hamilton visited Pike County.

Hamilton spoke with local and state officials while assessing conditions in the aftermath of catastrophic flooding. He met with the media at Appalachian Wireless Arena on Tuesday afternoon.

“You never really know what it’s like for a survivor until you walk in their shoes, and that’s not always the easiest to do. We’re seeing communities being rebuilt and we’re seeing the strength of what that Kentucky spirit can show,” Hamilton said.

Pike and Martin counties are among several in the Commonwealth approved for federal assistance.

Hamilton said his visit to eastern Kentucky gave him valuable information that he will take back with him to Washington, D.C., and will help the federal government make informed decisions about how to assist impacted areas.

“It was a tremendous honor to be here and to see and hear your stores, to hear about your experiences. I can tell you that you’re not forgotten about. We deeply care about the needs of this community, and we are going to partner with you in every way possible to ensure that this community can recover as swiftly as possible,” Hamilton said.
