GEORGETOWN, Texas — Every week on KVUE, we feature a different child in the Texas foster care system, in hopes of helping them get adopted by a forever family.
Andrew is a 15-year-old girl and a sophomore in high school who is in the Texas foster care system. She is a bright young lady who enjoys a good story – whether she’s reading it or writing it herself.
KVUE’s Hannah Rucker met up with Andrew at Lark & Owl Booksellers in Georgetown. Andrew enjoyed the eclectic collection of book genres and trinkets. She said her favorite book genres are mystery and poetry.
“I like anything that really pulls me in and keeps me wondering until the very end,” Andrew said.
She said her favorite color is pink, she likes Betty Boop and she really enjoys going to school. She has three teachers she said really look out for her and friends she likes seeing. Getting good grades is important to her, and she likes a good challenge.
“I don’t even like saying I like school in front of friends because a lot of them say, ‘Oh, I hate school.’ And I just want to be like, ‘I’m not telling you nothing about how I like school,'” Andrew said.
Andrew turns 16 in June and said rather than a forever family, she would be more comfortable warming up to a foster family. She wants a pleasant and supportive setting so she can finish the last two years of high school strong.
“As a kid, I want ‘for now’ goals – present goals, not long-term yet – I just wish for someone to step up for a little bit,” Andrew said. “You don’t have to adopt me fully, you just got to step in for a little bit. That’s all I really want.”
Her dream is to go to Texas State University and study psychology.
“I want to help other kids like me, who have been involved with CPS in Texas. Help them figure out how to cope with that,” Andrew said.
She said she also has an interest in cosmetology.

KVUE launched the Forever Families segment with Partnerships for Children (PFC) in June 2020 to highlight children in the Heart Gallery of Central Texas who need secure and permanent families. Every day, there are nearly 1,000 children waiting to get adopted in Central Texas, according to PFC.

Editor’s note: The children who are in the Heart Gallery program and featured in KVUE’s Forever Families segments are children who have had every effort made on their behalf to connect them with family or others in their community to provide options for permanent, adoptive homes. Through no fault of their own, that hasn’t happened yet, and so in partnership with the Department of Family and Protective Services, we collaborate to bring awareness to KVUE viewers about these children in the hopes of finding them permanency before they age out.
