LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD/Gray News) – A high school senior in Texas is receiving a scholarship to help her attend college as she also takes on cancer.

Coronado High School senior Briana Martinez said she has wanted to be a veterinarian since the third grade and has been thinking about her future career ever since.

However, late last year, Martinez started coming home extremely tired. Things got worse when she started to notice her lymph nodes were swelling.

Doctors ended up diagnosing Martinez with Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Martinez will have to undergo chemotherapy and radiation treatment, but she is a fighter and determined not to let it stop her.

“Now we know what it is. Now I can push through, fight for it, and get over with it ‘cause I do want to finish high school,” she said.

On Thursday, Martinez received word from an area college that it would help her with her education goals.

South Plains College offered Martinez a full-ride scholarship. She graduates in May and has already accepted the offer.

“At South Plains College, our vision is to improve every student’s life,” South Plains College President Robin Satterwhite said. “Briana is facing one of the most challenging battles of her life, and we want to help her accomplish her goals as she overcomes this illness.”

Martinez said she still aspires to work in the veterinary field and will enroll in her college classes this fall.

Loved ones have also started a GoFundMe to assist the high school senior on your medical and educational journey.
