A Long Island teenager has been arrested and charged with fatally shooting another teen he had previously quarreled with, police said Monday.
Jeremias Ferrufino-Rodriguez, 18, was accused of killing Jefferson Mancia-Fernandez, 19, in a brazen daytime shooting Saturday in Hempstead, Nassau County police said. Ferrufino-Rodriguez was formally charged with one count of second-degree murder and two gun crimes.
Both the suspect and the victim lived in Hempstead. Investigators said Mancia-Fernandez was helping his mother move apartments and walking down a neighborhood street when Ferrufino-Rodriguez spotted him, Newsday reported.
Cops said Ferrufino-Rodriguez then pulled up in his vehicle and shot Mancia-Fernandez once in the chest, according to News 12 Long Island.
“These two individuals knew each other; this was a targeted event,” Nassau County police officer Stephen Frederick told Newsday. “Apparently, there’s some friction between them from the neighborhood, and on that particular day they ended up in the same location at the same time.”
Authorities said the shooting was not related to any street gangs, according to Newsday. Officers executed several search warrants in the area, leading to Ferrufino-Rodriguez’s arrest at his home on Sunday morning.
The weapon used to kill Mancia-Fernandez has not yet been recovered, authorities said. Ferrufino-Rodriguez had no prior criminal record.
