WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Trump’s address to Congress Tuesday night is eliciting vastly different responses from Senators in the Two Virginias.
Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) praised the President saying, “We are off to a strong start already, but I know our brightest days are ahead.”
Where as Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) felt that the address “showed that he [Trump] and his Administration have no problem turning their backs on middle-class Americans.”
Sen. Capito believes the President’s vision for the next for years will bolster the American economy and its citizens while Sen. Kaine says quite the opposite.
“…He delivered a strong and optimistic vision for our country—one that prioritizes securing our border, unleashing American energy, strengthening our military, and providing much needed tax relief for hardworking families,” said Sen. Capito.
“President Trump has imposed steep tariffs that will raise costs and hurt businesses, fired thousands of federal workers who provide critical services to millions of Americans, [and] illegally stopped the flow of federal funds that support programs Americans rely on..,” said Sen. Kaine.
Both of the legislators’ messages were ultimately shown through the lens of the states they represent.
“I know many Virginians are worried about the state of our country, and they have my commitment that I’ll continue to stand up against any efforts that will harm Virginians, hurt our economy, or make Virginians less safe,” said Sen. Kaine.
“These are issues that matter to West Virginians, and it is exactly why the majority of voters across our country and in West Virginia overwhelmingly supported the president,” said Sen. Capito.
