ELK GROVE, Calif. (KCRA) – Emotions ran high Tuesday night at a school district meeting where parents spoke out demanding answers about why a teacher handed out a classroom assignment that focused on a racial slur.
“It’s time for us all to commit to ensuring that every Black member of the district is treated with dignity and respect and humanity every single day,” said Kathy District, who works for the Elk Grove Unified School District.
KCRA obtained a photo of the assignment that contained a racial slur and an explanation of the history of the word.
The assignment also included an image of a racist cartoon dollar bill using the same word.
Wilson was in tears after speaking in front of the school board.
Members of the community hugged her in support.
“I shared how I felt and I think that we need to come together with solutions that are more than training, that are more than an email. There needs to be accountability that is ongoing,” she said.
The school district is currently investigating the teacher who handed out the assignment.
Wilson is asking the school district to repair the damage the assignment caused for students, staff and families.
“We need to continue speaking up no matter who it is or how it is, because our kids deserve, our kids deserve to be who they are,” she said.
