Gaines County has one of the highest rates of vaccine exemptions in the state.

Measles cases in West Texas have risen to 223 as of Monday, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS).

Cases in West Texas by county:

  • Dallam – 5
  • Dawson – 10
  • Ector – 2
  • Gaines – 156
  • Lubbock – 3
  • Lynn – 2
  • Martin – 3
  • Terry – 32
  • Yoakum – 10

Measles cases by age range:

  • 0-4 years – 76
  • 5-17 years – 98
  • 18+ years – 38
  • Pending – 11

Measles cases by vaccination status:

  • Not vaccinated – 80
  • Unknown Status – 138
  • Vaccinated with at least one dose – 5

DSHS said 29 patients have been hospitalized for the measles and there is one death in a unvaccinated school-aged child who lived in the outbreak area.

Lea County, New Mexico has also reported a measles outbreak there. On Thursday, the Associated Press reported that an adult infected with measles died.

Gaines County has one of the highest rates of vaccine exemptions in the state, according to the AP in early February.
