AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas Longhorns appear to have a long way to go if they wish to make the 2025 NCAA Tournament, but a win in the first round of the SEC Tournament has brought them one step closer.
A strong first half was enough for the Longhorns to secure a 79-72 victory Wednesday, fending off a strong second half from the Commodores and securing their place in the second round of the SEC Tournament.
The Longhorns made an impressive 46.3% of their shot attempts. Freshman Tre Johnson and senior Tramon Mark led the team in scoring, with each tallying 19 points. Four Longhorns starters finished in double figures, with the starting five accounting for 72 of the team’s 79 points.
Next up, the Longhorns will face the tournament’s No. 5 seed, archrival Texas A&M. That game will take place Thursday afternoon, with a time yet to be determined as it will follow the Ole Miss vs. Arkansas matchup which starts at 1 p.m.
The Longhorns and Aggies split their two prior games this season, with the Longhorns winning the most recent matchup after Tramon Mark hit a buzzer-beating layup with three seconds remaining.
