Man arrested in shooting incident at Matoaka residence

MATOAKA, W.Va. -A Mercer County man is behind bars after an alleged shooting incident at a Matoaka residence on Sunday.

According to a criminal complaint, on March 16, Mercer County Deputies were dispatched at 8 a.m. to the area of Charles Gross Road in Matoaka in reference to a brandishing complaint.

E-911 received a call saying a male with a gun was in her driveway and the male was walking towards the residence.

The line was then disconnected.

Deputies had been called to the same residence almost 2 hours earlier for a verbal altercation that didn’t result in any arrest.

When deputies arrived at the scene after the second 911 call, they observed three adults at the residence and a small child.

Deputies learned that Cody Allen Runyon, 27, had allegedly shot inside and outside the home and had left before deputies arrived.

Deputies documented multiple 9mm shell casings and bullet holes around the scene.

Deputies also were told that Runyon allegedly made threats and threw things around the house when someone called 911 around 6 a.m.

Runyon allegedly questioned the individuals inside to find out who called 911 the first time.

Another witness alleged that Runyon discharged the gun over his head and also pointed it at all of the victims inside the home.

Runyon was taken into custody after deputies located him walking to his home on Giatto Road after wrecking the car he left in on Piedmont Road.

During an interview with deputies Runyon said he only shot the gun one or two times at the floor, and he never threatened anyone.

Runyon is being charged with three counts of 1st Degree Robbery, four counts of Wanton Endangerment, Child Neglect with Risk of Death, and Domestic Assault.

He is currently being held at Southern Regional Jail on a $100,000 cash only bond.
