GRANT COUNTY, Ky. (WXIX/Gray News) – A historic church built in 1885 collapsed in Kentucky Saturday amid the powerful storms that ripped through the region.

According to the Grant County Historical Society, part of the 140-year-old Old Williamstown Presbyterian Church was damaged.

The steeple on the left side of the building fell, leading to the destruction of the entire front side of the building, the historical society stated.

Fire and EMS officials said no one was hurt and the building had been vacant for a decade.

According to the Grant County Historical Society, the Williamstown landmark was constructed in 1885, and it served the reorganized congregation of the Williamstown Presbyterian Church, which was organized as early as 1845.

The society says that the second church building on the site was dedicated on May 31, 1885.

The success of this church after construction was unknown, as they had only 25 members remaining by 1901.

Grant County Historical Society says the church eventually closed its doors. Over the next century, many businesses used the church, including law offices, a pawn shop and a Christian bookstore.
