An ex-con was charged with assaulting a fellow shelter resident who later died, police said Tuesday.

Phillip Stevens, 62, was charged Monday with misdemeanor assault, then released without bail. More serious charges could be added once an autopsy is done.

An autopsy will determine the cause of death of the 64-year-old victim, whose name has not yet been released.

Police said the two men got into an argument early Sunday around 7:40 a.m. at a shelter on Varet St. near White St. in East Williamsburg.

When police arrived, the victim was in bed and in cardiac arrest, police said.

Medics resuscitated the man and took him to Woodhull Hospital, where he later died.

A large amount of blood was found at the scene, police said, though it wasn’t clear if a weapon was used in the confrontation.

Stevens has eight prior arrests and served two stints in state prison, including five years for criminal mischief before his parole in October 2018, according to records. Prior to that, he served five years for burglary before he was paroled in January 2003, records show.
