SMYRNA, Ga. (WANF/Gray News) – A Georgia firefighter plans to adopt a puppy from a litter he helped save from a burning house.
Pickens County Fire Rescue Lt. Paramedic Isaac Holaway and his crew saved a litter of puppies trapped in a house fire on March 6, WANF reports.
“I just handed them out the window to another firefighter,” Holaway said.
Firefighters say the puppies’ mother laid over her babies during the fire. All seven of the puppies survived, but their mother didn’t make it.
“Tried to do CPR on her. Worked her for several minutes,” Holaway said.
Three of the puppies are now at Bosley’s Place Rescue in Smyrna, and on Monday, they were in the hands of the man who saved their lives.
Holaway dropped by the nonprofit with his two kids and his wife. The puppies are too young to take home now, but once they are big enough, the family plans to adopt one.
“They’re not people, but they’re loved by family members just as much as they are people. So, anytime, we rescue anybody out of the house, whether it be a person or an animal, is a plus,” Holaway said. “I love helping people. It’s as simple as that.”
The puppies’ eyes opened the day they met Holaway.
“Whenever there is a light at the end of the tunnel, not just them surviving but being rescued and reuniting them with their rescuer, it is just a real full circle,” said Jennifer Siegel, the founder of Bosley’s Place.
Bosley’s Place, which launched in March 2015, is a nursery and sanctuary for homeless and orphaned neonatal puppies that provides bottle feeding and 24-hour care.
