The recent winning comes less than two months following a controversy revolving around the Texas Lottery.

AUSTIN, Texas — An Austin resident is the latest Texas millionaire after winning the lottery earlier this month.

According to the Texas Lottery, the lucky winner purchased a $1 million Powerball powerplay ticket at an Exxon on Dry Creek Drive in northwest Austin. The ticket was chosen in a drawing on March 8.

While they did not match the red Powerball number, the anonymous winner correctly chose the other five numbers: 2-4-16-23-63, according to the Texas Lottery.

Powerball drawings take place at 10:12 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays weekly.

Texas Lottery controversy

The recent winning comes less than two months after an $83.5 million Lotto Texas with Extra! ticket was purchased at a retail store in North Austin, prompting an investigation into the state’s third-party courier systems. These systems include websites or apps that purchase lottery tickets directly from retailers for their customers.

Several Texas leaders, including Gov. Greg Abbott, questioned the system’s legitimacy after the Austin ticket was bought through the Jackpocket app, owned by DraftKings.

On Feb. 24, Abbott called for the Texas Rangers to investigate two drawings, including the nearly $84 million win in Austin. That same day, the Texas Lottery Commission stated that third-party courier services were no longer permitted in the state.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton also scrutinized third-party systems as he launched an investigation into several “suspicious and possibly unlawful” wins.

Before the controversy, a $1 million Blitz Texas Lottery scratch ticket was purchased in February at an Austin convenience store.
