– The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for McDowell, Wyoming, Raleigh, and Fayette counties.
Strong winds, warm temperatures, and humidity as low as ten percent are creating high fire risks today.
Even areas outside the warning remain vulnerable to wildfires.
Firefighters say discarded cigarette butts and escaping embers from fire pits are common fire triggers.
We spoke with Princeton firefighter, Eric Six, who shares important safety tips to prevent fires from spreading.
He says, “If you don’t have to burn at this moment, don’t burn. If you do have to burn, just burn natural vegetation and be sure that you have a dirt ring around the fire area and to be sure to have a water source on hand and be with the fire at all times, and if anything looks like it’s starting to spread out, just be sure to call 911.”
The red flag warning remains in effect until 10 PM Wednesday.
Also, a reminder: burning is banned from 7 AM to 5 PM in West Virginia through May 31st, and from midnight to 4 PM in Virginia through April 30th.
