BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – Lori Sexton received the West Virginia History Hero Award this month for her work with the Mercer County Historical Society and her research on women during the Civil War. The award comes from the West Virginia Department of Arts and Culture and can only be given to a person once in their lifetime.

Sexton told WVVA it is moving to be recognized for her effort.

Sexton encourages everyone to go out and learn more about history.

“You really don’t know where you’re going until you know where you’ve come from,” said Sexton.
