The MTA is set to award a $186.6 million contract to a joint venture of management firm AECOM and HNTB New York Engineering and Architecture to provide project management and consulting on the next phase of the Second Ave. subway.

The contract, which is expected to receive final approval by the MTA’s board Wednesday, is for overseeing work on the next three contracts of the project, which will extend the Second Ave. line from its current terminal at E. 96th St. up through abandoned 1970s-era tunnels to E. 116th St., and then westward through a new tunnel to E 125th St. and Lexington Ave.

The contract for the first portion of that work — the  tunneling — is expected to be awarded later this year. Another contract for aboveground construction associated with the extension between E. 96th and E. 116th Sts. is expected to be awarded in 2026.

The final contract — for station entrances and fittings, as well as tracks and power — will be awarded contingent on the progress of the other two.

The expected award to AECOM-HNTB is to oversee the three contracts and keep them on schedule. The contract provides for the MTA to assess up to $4 million in incentive payments or fines should the joint venture manage to get ahead of — or fall behind — schedule.
