BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – Getting a denied request for help from the Federal Emergency Management Agency is not the end of hope for help from the agency.
In fact, representatives with FEMA say a denied request could be caused by something simple such as missing paperwork that’s needed.
“That’s one of the things you can deal with by going to one of the disaster recovery centers. They’ll look up your application and find out what it is that’s missing,” said Nate Custer, media relations specialist for FEMA.
“It may be something needed to establish where you had the damage, that it’s indeed your principle residence, that you’re the owner, things like that,” said Custer.
Custer says you can appeal the denial and provide needed documents that could allow you to receive assistance. He adds that people who have received financial assistance from FEMA can also appeal grant amounts given.
“Some are also going to be dissatisfied and feel they’ve provided all the information needed but they haven’t gotten a grant to the extent that they feel they should. You can appeal that FEMA money decision,” said Custer.
Custer says the bottom line is if you have questions about getting financial assistance from FEMA you should visit a disaster recovery center for answers.
