Terrified residents have told how they woke to the sound of “explosions” after a motorhome burst into flames outside a home in Dundee.

Emergency services raced to Mansion Drive in Claverhouse after the alarm was raised shortly before 4am on Wednesday. Fire crews attended and battled the blaze for several hours.

Pictures taken from the scene showed the vehicle, which was parked just yards from a property on the street, engulfed in flames. A huge plume of thick black smoke could be seen billowing up into the air while shocked neighbours watched on.

An eyewitness, who lives near the scene, told the Record: “I was woken by an explosion before 4am. I looked out my bedroom window and I panicked as I thought it was a house on fire as the flames were very large.

“I called 999 and they told me they had been informed and the fire brigade were on their way. There were a few more smaller explosions afterwards. The fire brigade took a while to get the fire under control. It’s such a shame for the motorhome owners as it’s completely gutted.”

Firefighters left the scene at around 5.20am after extinguishing the blaze and ensuring the area was made safe.

The cause of the fire is currently unclear but police have launched a probe into establish the full circumstances. Officers confirmed that no one was injured during the incident.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 4am on Wednesday we received a report of a motorhome on fire in the Mansion Drive area of Dundee. Emergency services attended and the fire was put out by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

“There were no injuries. Inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 3.53am on Wednesday, 2 April to reports of a van on fire on Mansion Drive, Dundee.

“Operations Control mobilised one appliance to the scene and on arrival firefighters found a motorhome well alight.

“A further two appliances were mobilised to the scene where the fire was extinguished. There were no casualties, and crews left at 5.22am after ensuring the area was made safe.”
