Big-hearted Nathan Aspinall says Cameron Menzies is too emotional and wants to help the Scot overcome his big-stage stress.

The English star is pals with the Ayrshire ace and felt his pain as he struggled during their meeting on Saturday night. Menzies lost his way during the contest which Aspinall won comfortably and the pair exchanged an embrace and words at the finale. The Asp has been through turmoil himself with injuries and issues and shown mental toughness to get back into top darts form.

He’d love to assist Menzies and said: “The emotion that Cammy brings to that stage. And he’s not doing it as gamesmanship. It’s just the way he plays the game and I spoke to him after the match when he was hugging me and doing all sorts, I’m like: You’re putting too much emotion in and it is affecting you mate. You don’t do that on the floor, why are you doing it on the stage?

“He’s a cracking lad. I’ve known Cammy since before I was in the PDC and he was in the PDC. I was just basically trying to help. He brings emotion to the stage and he knows that, he’s working on that so I am not speaking out of turn, he said it after the game. I’m not even just saying it, during that match, I was thinking: Let me get hold of this guy and I can sort him out because I have been through a lot of issues, but I believe I am very mentally strong.

The two players exchanged an emotional embrace after their clash

“Maybe one day when big Barry [Hearn] makes the World Championship a million pounds and I win, maybe I might take a step back and manage him and look after Cammy! At the moment, he’s my opponent, he’s my enemy, so when I play him, I’ve got to beat him. But off the oche I will try and help as much as I can. There’s no disputing his talent. He’s just got to try and sort in between his ears out.”
